What epigenomics is
Epigenomics is the genome-wide study of epigenetic modifications — chemical marks such as DNA methylation and histone changes that regulate whether a gene is expressed, without altering the underlying DNA sequence. The full set of these marks in a cell is the epigenome.
Why it matters for longevity
Epigenetic patterns change in characteristic ways as we age, and these shifts are the basis of the epigenetic clock — the most widely used estimator of biological age. Some of the marks are potentially reversible, which is why epigenetic reprogramming (see partial reprogramming) is one of the most closely watched longevity research directions.
What the evidence shows
Epigenomic ageing signatures are robust and reproducible, and methylation clocks correlate with health outcomes. Whether deliberately editing the epigenome can safely slow or reverse human ageing is still experimental.
Bottom line
Epigenomics is the science behind aging clocks and a leading target for future interventions — already useful for measurement, still early for treatment.
