Pharmacogenomics

Pharmacogenomics studies how your genes affect your response to drugs — the basis for tailoring dose and drug choice, and increasingly relevant to longevity pharmacology.

What pharmacogenomics is

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how a person's genome influences their response to medicines — how quickly a drug is metabolised, how well it works, and the risk of side effects. Genetic testing can flag, in advance, who is likely to respond, who needs a different dose, and who should avoid a drug.

Why it matters for longevity

Longevity medicine leans heavily on repurposed drugs such as metformin, rapamycin and GLP-1 receptor agonists. Individual response to these varies, and pharmacogenomic data can help personalise choice and dosing rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all protocol.

What the evidence shows

For a defined set of drug-gene pairs, pharmacogenomic testing is clinically validated and used in mainstream care (e.g. certain cardiology, oncology and psychiatry drugs). For most longevity-specific uses the evidence is earlier, and broad consumer panels can over-promise.

Bottom line

A genuinely useful tool for specific drug-gene interactions; valuable when it changes a real prescribing decision, less so as a generic “wellness” panel.
