Aerobic exercise — sustained activity like brisk walking, running or cycling — is among the most evidence-backed longevity interventions, driving cardiorespiratory fitness and lower mortality.

What aerobic exercise is

Aerobic (“with oxygen”) exercise is sustained, rhythmic activity — brisk walking, running, cycling, swimming — performed at an intensity your body can fuel largely through aerobic metabolism. It contrasts with short, intense anaerobic efforts and with resistance training.

Why it matters for longevity

Cardiorespiratory fitness, best captured by VO2 max, is one of the strongest known predictors of all-cause mortality — often outweighing traditional risk factors. Regular aerobic activity raises fitness, protects the heart, brain and metabolism, and helps counter age-related decline including sarcopenia when combined with strength work.

What the evidence shows

The link between higher fitness and lower mortality is exceptionally robust across large cohort studies, and physical-activity guidelines (roughly 150–300 minutes of moderate activity per week) are backed by strong evidence. Benefits appear across all ages, and even modest increases in activity move the needle.

Bottom line

One of the highest-value, lowest-risk longevity interventions there is — the biggest gains come from moving people from doing little to doing some.
